Learn how to apply the six traits of writing
from an author who uses them everyday.
Classroom writing workshops take place in the classroom. I write with one class at a time (30 students maximum) so I can work with each student individually. My specialty is helping students overcome writer's block!
For grades two and up, writing an short original poem will allow the students to work with an author from start to finish and experience all six traits of writing. Each student will write a four line poem in this session.
Here is my lesson plan step by step:
Feed the Muse:
Theory: Surround yourself with language.
Practice: 1) Select a theme (not too narrow, not too broad).
2) Share poems by master poets (read aloud).
Theory: Write what you know.
Practice: Write poetry AFTER exploring a concept.
Call on the Muse:
Theory: Be concrete, not abstract.
Practice: Brainstorm a list of words about your theme.
Theory: Be specific.
Practice: Circle one item from your brainstorming list. This is your poetry topic.
Theory: Surround yourself with language.
Practice: List words that describe your topic. Use nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs.
Theory: Select a point-of-view.
Practice: Decide if you are IN the poem (acting it out) or OUTSIDE of the poem (watching it take place).
Theory: Organize your thoughts and plot out your poem.
Practice: Where does your poem begin? What happens first, second, third?
Theory: Move from prewriting to writing.
Practice: Begin writing your poem. Use all five senses.
Theory: Rewrite, edit, revise.
Practice: Change your mind. Move words and ideas around.
Theory: “Publish” your poem.
Practice: Share your poem with someone else.
*I work one-on-one with each student during this workshop.*
