Teaching Kids to Write:
6 Traits of Writing Bibliographies

Mentor texts give students a model to guide them as they write. Picture books are just right for this purpose: the books are short and can be read by the students themselves. Best of all, stellar examples of writing can be found inside the covers of picture books!

Picture Book of the Day: Using Picture Books to Teach the Six Traits of Writing is a ongoing bibliography blog. Monday through Friday I read a new book and post about the trait it models. (To see a trait-by-trait list, click on a trait category in the column on the right and all of books with that trait will appear.)

Picture Books for Teaching Six Trait Writing is an 8 page trait-by trait bibliography from the Freeman Library in Irving, Texas.

Using Picture Books to Teach the 6 Traits of Writing is a 6 page trait-by trait bibliography from the Concord Library Media Center in Edina, Minnesota.

The Concord bibliography links to More Books for Teaching the 6 Traits. This 4 page trait-by trait bibliography was adapted from a 1997 text.

Using Picture Books to Teach Narrative and Six Trait Writing was last updated in 2000 by Sandra O'Berry and her team in North Carolina. There are lists for organization, word choice and sentence fluency.

Picture Books for Six–Trait Writing is a 14 page trait-by trait bibliography created in 1999 by the Jeffco Schools in Golden, Colorado.
